Sidestream Smoke
What is It?

Smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and smoke that is being exhaled by the smoker.
Sidestream smoke may be responsible for 30% of all lung cancer deaths. It may cause:

  • Burning of the eyes
  • Breathing difficulties
  • General discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Increase in blood cholesterol level
  • Nausea
  • Allergic reactions
  • Nasal congestion
  • Coughing
  • Dizziness
  • Heart disease or heart attack

Children are affected the most.
Children with smoking parents have

  • More illnesses
  • More coughing and wheezing
  • Respiratory infections and asthma
  • Children also have a greater chance of developing cancer later in life and a greater chance of becoming smokers themselves.
