Winter Activity - Making Taffy

What is Maple Taffy? Is it hard to make?
Maple Taffy is a concentrate of Pure Maple Syrup. This concentrate is poured over lightly packed snow, then it hardens. The hardened syrup is then picked up with a stick or spoon and then eaten like a lollypop.

Maple Taffy is very easy to make. You'll need:

  • Pure Maple Syrup (at least 6 fl.oz. or 175ml)
  • A small snow ball or a teaspoon of vanilla ice cream
  • A pot filled with packed, clean snow* or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream

Boil the Pure Maple Syrup in a deep pot. If it produces too many bubbles, put a drop or two of vegetable oil in the boiling Pure Maple Syrup.

After it has boiled for 4 minutes, test the syrup on top of a small snow ball. When the syrup clings to the ball and stops running, the right sugar density has been reached.

Call everyone and pour the syrup in short, thin lines onto the packed, clean snow. Do not pour all at once. Enjoy with spoons or twist onto popsicle sticks.

*A slab of ice or ice cubes are not good substitutes to make the Taffy on. You could try finely crushed ice.
